With ASDs, Teach “I Can”

Children with Asperger’s and autism spectrum disorders are often classified by what they cannot do. Although this approach provides a starting point for intervention and thus building the skills that the child needs to function in a classroom and beyond, the process can have a negative impact on the child’s self-esteem and emotional well-being. A strengths-based approach to therapy – one that teaches “I Can” – can be helpful because it turns the focus from what the ASD prevents the child from doing, to what the child’s strengths are. This can be a very positive experience for both the child and their parents, and help establish a habit of focusing on the child’s successes instead of their obstacles.
